How Far is Too Far?

CIMG3600 Me and my daughter Sofie (she is asleep) coming home from our bike ride.

I just started to ride my bike to church one day a week while I only have one of the kids with me. The reason for doing it is so that we both can get some fresh air and I can get in some exercise in an otherwise busy day.

When I started out most my friends would ask me where I live and if I needed a ride. Though I appreciated their concern I thought it funny that they thought it was way to far to ride my bike to and from church even though it only took me 30 minutes one way.

An elderly friend of mine lives right by a park and she invited me and some other ladies to come and visit. She asked us to carpool if possible because she has limited parking at her condominium. I suggested that it would be easy to just park at the park and then walk to her place, about a 2 – 5 minute walk or so. She thought that would be too far for us as when we arrived at her place would have to walk 3 stairs up and down a long hallway.

I can see how that might be difficult for her to do, but for young women in their 20’s and 30’s that should not be a problem.

How far is too far?

I don’t think anything is far away as long as it doesn’t take me more than an hour to walk there or 30 minutes to ride my bike there.

What is to far for you?

Funny, I have a neighbor about 1/2 mile away. We always walk/ride bikes to her house. . .when she comes they (she & the kids) always, always drive. It just cracks me up. I don't know that I would be dedicated enough to do a 30 min ride but maybe? What a great idea, though, to think about another way of getting from here-to-there.

Hi Marianne, just dropping in from Company Girl Coffee... :) nice to get out and about in the fresh air isn't it!
We recently gave our car away to a family in need, and I have been thinking walking to the shops is too far some days... but you have inspired me again. It only takes 15 mins or less! What am I worried about? I think if us modern day women were thrown back into history, we would struggle! They walked everywhere!!

Well, you are exactly right, but I probably couldn't ride a bike very far these days, but I can walk with the best. We have become a very lazy society and it's such a shame. It's likely the main cause of all the obesity problems today.

Good for you, keep up the good work and it will serve you well! Blessings!

I love to walk or ride my bike as much as possible. How far is too far? It really comes down to the time I have available. These days a 30-minute one-way bike trip or walk is about as far as we go.

I am looking forward to my oldest daughter riding her own bike this year; then me and all three of my three kids can zoom about the city! Though we do use our minivan, I prefer to be free of the expense and constraints of driving. I'm glad to meet another bike enthusiast! May our tribe increase...

When I was driving 30 miles each way to college (2007-2009), I parked in a remote lot and walked the one mile to the main campus. Here I was at age 50, with these 20-year-olds gasping in astonishment that anyone would walk so far!

I can't really commute anywhere by bike because the direct roads are not safe enough, but I do get out for 30-to-75-minute recreational rides at least once or twice most weeks. I enjoyed your post; thanks for commenting on mine too!
